2009 Herb of the Year
Bay Laurel
(Laurus nobilis)

Bay is a staple in most kitchens as a flavoring for soups, stews, stuffing and marinades, as well as a multitude of other culinary uses. Its glossy green leaves are aromatic when crushed, and make beautiful holiday wreaths and arrangements as well!

In our climate (Zone 8 and south), bay can be grown as a landscape plant that can (eventually!) reach 60 feet. In colder zones, you can grow it in a pot and move it indoors for winter. In a large pot, the plant can grow to 5 to 6 feet.
